Always Playful, Never Predictable
Ibis Styles Bruges City Centre, located in the heart of a city known for its medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and serene canals, required renovation, particularly since the neighboring Novotel was also being refurbished. The challenge was to create a design that captured the spirit of Bruges in a surprising and fresh way, while preserving the historic character of the building and appealing to a wide range of visitors.
The concept was to bring Bruges itself into the hotel through design, using the city’s springtime daffodils, historic architecture, and serene canals as central inspirations. Communal spaces and guest rooms were transformed to reflect these elements, with petal-inspired lobby pillars, flower-shaped lighting, and a sculptural floral installation at the entrance echoing the daffodil fields of the Begijnhof Monastery.
Guest rooms continue the narrative through layered details: headboards fold like narcissus petals, rugs ripple toward mirrors creating the illusion of endless waterways, and bathroom tiles hint at soft reflections. A palette of daffodil yellow, leafy green, and natural neutrals unites the spaces, while even functional areas like the manager’s and multipurpose rooms incorporate iridescent surfaces that capture shifting light and movement. The design balanced durability, budget considerations, and the playful, contradictory spirit of ibis Styles. We partnered with Forum for the realisation
The renovation established ibis Styles Bruges City Centre as a culturally resonant hotel that appeals to a broad range of visitors. By weaving together heritage, natural beauty, and the brand’s personality, the project elevated the guest experience and positioned the hotel as a reflection of Bruges itself, rather than just a place to stay.
